2014 The Nest Merlot, Squawking Magpie
2014 was an exceptional growing season and the optimal health and maturity of the grapes is reflected in the Merlot based blend, The Nest. Fragrant, with aromas of red rose, violet, dark plums and spice. Mouth filling, lush and full bodied with sustained depth and velvety texture through the palate. Flavours of black doris plums and sweet, spicy leather abound. Well rounded and blanced by fine supporting tannins.

- Food Matching: This wine is well suited to game meats, slow cooked beef in red wine, spicy braised red cabbage with toasted pinenuts.
- Vineyard: Single vineyard site in the Gimblett Gravels growing district in Hawkes Bay, NZ. The vineyard was planted in 2002. The vines are VSP trained and sustainable viticulture is practiced.
- Vinification: Attention to detail in the vineyard and winery is the hallmark of the Nest. Hand picked and gently destemmed the grapes were fermentde in small open topped vats. After extensive post ferment maceration to achieve balance between the fruit weight and the structural tannins, the wine was basket pressed before going to French oak barrels, 30 % new. The Nest was blended after 6 months in barrel and returned to oak for a further 12 months maturation.
