A pale yellow hue with a textured and complex nose. The sweet pastry and orchard fruit notes are enhanced by hints of citrus, white flowers and fresh butter. The initial taste is clean, and the finish is crisp and long with a slight mineral undertone. Superb complexity that combines young aromas with biscuit notes gained through maturation in cellars. Chardonnay - 56%, Pinot Meunier - 24%, Pinot Noir - 20%
Food Matching: Ideal with freshly shucked oysters, foie gras, cured meats or simply enjoyed on it's own for aperitif.
Vineyard: Gratien owns just 1.5 hectares of vineyards, with the majority of their fruit fulfilled via long-term contracts with growers across a diverse set of Crus. All three of the major grape varieties are used, although the percentage of Pinot Meunier has been reduced over time. The grapes are picked and pressed near the vineyards, the musts are then transported to headquarters in Epernay, where they are placed into oak barrels and fermented
Vinification: High quality standards are maintained in the selection of grapes, traditional vinification and maturing in small 228 litre oak casks, with self-imposed limits on production levels. Alfred Gratien make a conscious decision not to use malolactic fermentation in the production of their champagne. This is to ensure that it maintains its original character and the wine retains its freshness, even as it ages. This special care guarantees the unique quality that makes Alfred Gratien truly exceptional.
