Vineyard: The Krone vineyard lies near Laubenheim next to Tesch's Löhrer berg vines. Geographical proximity is, however, pretty much all these two vineyards share. The steep southeast slope of the Krone is characterized by a mix of light and coarse soils from decalcified loess and weathered sandstone with a high quartz content. This is a very dry site and the lack of water stresses the vines. The 35 year old vines are planted at a density of 6000 per hectare with yields of 57hl/ha. Grapes are harvested by hand in the last week of October.
Vinification: Selected grapes from this single vineyard were destemmed, the skins were left in contact for between 4-8 hours to balance acidity. They were then pressed using a pneumatic press. Fermentation took place using wild & cultured yeast in stainless steel tanks at temperatures of 12-15°C lasting 40 days. The wine remained in contact with the lees for 6-12 weeks with battonage every 1-3 weeks and it was filtered before bottling.
