  • Tasting Note: Vibrant cool-climate Chardonnay from Tasmania, aromatic with lemon zest, flint and hazelnut, with a soft note of lemon curd on the tongue.
  • Food Matching: The vibrancy of this wine would be perfect with the freshness of a salmon gravlax or salmon sashimi.
  • Vineyard: The fruit for this first Stargazer Chardonnnay was sourced from my good friends, the Semmens at Marion’s Vineyard in the Tamar Valley and also from Gerald Ellis’s highly regarded Meadowbank Vineyard further south in the Derwent Valley. Marion’s Vineyard, surely one of the most picturesque vineyards in Tasmania, was planted overlooking the Tamar River in 1980, while Meadowbank was planted to the Penfolds clone in 1987. Both are cane pruned and produced some exceptional fruit.
  • Vinification: Handpicked and whole bunch pressed to one, two and three year old French oak puncheons for fermentation by indigenous yeast. Post primary ferment, there was partial MLF but no lees stirring. The wine spent eight months in oak and two months in tank prior to bottling.
  • Awards and Press News: Matthew Jukes Winemaker Sam Connew's wines are conundrums wrapped in enigmas and it is great fun unravelling them in your glass. I adore my featured Chardonnay with its icy demeanour and formidable hauteur. Coming from a single vineyard in the Coal River Valley area, this is a wine with enviable vital statistics. It is positively crunchy with only 12.5% alcohol and the oak is respectful and subtle, too. Sam uses 500L puncheons and carries out no lees stirring at all and only partial malolactic fermentation. Oak is applied like delicate makeup as opposed to theatre slap. It is this restraint which allows the fruit to shine and shine it does. This is a wine which opens up incrementally over an hour in a glass and I venture that it would continue to do so if I wasn't so thirsty. Top 100 Australian Wines 2018
